Good or bad, whatever you are feeling at present, will not last forever..

July 8th, 2009

Its more than a law and nature follows it by heart. Good times or bad times, are all just phases in our life and its more than sure every phase will pass and other will come and the cycle goes on.
But still we get involved in these things so much that we forget this truth that this wont last.
Say, there is a doctor who has interest in business and social issues but not in medicine, decided to follow his heart and change his profession and enter into some business and social entrepreneurship with no familial or academic background in business. Whenever he encountered difficulties, he thought that why is he doing all this, he can do job or whatever, like all his doc friends are doing. Recently, he was so fed up that he just wanted to stop all this and get back to conventions but fortunately, some incident happened which made him realise its his struggle period or learning curve going on and it is essential for him to stick to his decision and follow his gut, no matter what comes if he wants to realise his dream. Every person, whether doc or businessman, has to pass through these phases but only those taste success who know all these things are temporary and will pass, so neither, they get depressed too much on failures nor too euphoric on wins on the path. The doc felt more enthusiastic than earlier and is back to business and blogs too..lol..as you know the doc is me..
So, i want to tell you all that whenever you feel depressed and world seems against you, trust me..this isn’t going to last..and you will be smiling again..god bless you..

the concept of idol worship..

May 19th, 2009

Idol worship, some are in favour of it, some oppose it but we all, who believe in God, practise it or have practised it few times in our life. As we believe and also teach children that God is everywhere, there is no need to go to temples, churches and other religious institutions to interact with Him. God is present in temple, as much as He is in me, in you. But we people still go to religious places challenging the truth that God is everywhere. The reason is that we people are not truthful in all our jobs and we avoid a constant watch inside us and make ourselves believe that God is not watching us or He is in temple busy with His other children. But in our subconscious mind, we feel that somebody is watching  us when we do something wrong even if there is nobody; there is something due to which we feel guilty on doing something wrong, maybe its God….

the biggest ever….election in india this time….

April 20th, 2009

India is currently going to polls for 15th lok sabha. Elections this time are unique in many ways, in my opinion. They are different from all the previous ones except the thing that politicians are so dumb to see the change in voter mindset and are still busy in blaming each other for all failures of india.
The factor that will surely play some important role this time is that 70 percent of the population is below 40 years of age and all parties are trying to attract this group without being aware of its needs and concerns. About 70 crore people will vote and surprisingly, 4.5 crore are voting for the first time.

some facts about election..

-it is largest in world with about 70 crore voters, the secong one is US with about 22 crore voters.

-70 percent of the population is below 40 years of age.

-4.5 crore are voting for the first time.

-During the budget presented in feb 2009Rs.1,120 Croreswas budgeted for election expenses.

-There are 828,804 polling stations in the country, a 20% increase over the 2004 election.

Being a part of this young group, i want to tell these politicians that we are highly ambitious about ourselves and our nation. We cant be attracted to any party if its star campaigner is a young guy who knows very less about india or if their star campaigner can make hate speeches to ensure media coverage and some votebank.

so, i request you all to vote and vote responsibly knowing all the details of the candidates or the pathetic options you have.

It is very rightly said that, we will be punished by getting poor governance for our crime of not voting. Like a foolish vegetarian thinks that tiger in front of him wont eat him bcoz he is a veg. similarly, a foolish voter or citizen thinks if you dont take interest in politics, politics wont take interest in you.  BUT IT DOESNT HAPPEN ACTUALLY…..

Economics simplified….

March 26th, 2009

This post is an attempt to describe basics of three economic systems in simple language.
3 question answered in 3 different ways give rise to 3 different economic systems..
Questions..
1.) what goods to be produced?
2.) how to produce?
3.) how to distribute them in people?

Answers by 3 different systems..
Capitalist says produce what people want using methods that use technology and are less labour intensive and distribute the goods to those who can pay for it(all things decided by market forces such as demand and supply)..
Socialist says produce what people need using methods which can give jobs to people and distribute to those who really need it(all things decided by the govt.)..
Mixed economy, like India, says let private people produce what people want and if there is something else what people need and no private body is interested in producing it, govt. will take care of its production..
All the three systems have their pros and cons.
There is no need to describe failure of socialists, history can explain better than me. Still, its obvious that if person is doing a job under govt, he has no ownership and he will get only what he needs and no incentive, How can he deliver his best when he is going to get only what he needs which further cant be decided by him and moreover, he will get his needs fulfilled even if he doesnt work properly; as he needs it and its duty of govt to fulfill citizens needs. This economic system is just not practical in human beings as they can think and feel.
Capitalist economy has no history of such failures but it also have history of crashes or slowdowns which are inevitable in strict sense, in my opinion. Its like a vicious circle, you can say because as there is growth in capitalist economy, technology will also grow and people will move to technologically advanced techniques of manufacturing which need less labour than previous one,as the sole motive of manufacturing is profit in a capitalist economy. So, growth in capitalism will lead more and more production by extensive mechanisation and minimal labour or job cuts done to reduce costs or improve profit margins. It will eventually lead to less buying power of the people as they will be without work. eventually, consumption decreases and production has to be slowed down as it is doing nothing except increasing debt in situation of reduced consumption. So, unless a capitalist economy keeps on finding markets in other places, it will face recession or slowdown.

Mixed economy is designed by picking good points from both systems where govt and private sector, both play an equally important role. It can perform bad only when its not regulated properly or in absence of law and order.
I conclude this post with hope you enjoyed it with some benefit and i will keep trying to explain basic and useful things of economics and would love to know any information you wish to share here.

Keep dreaming, its a good job and that too non taxable..

March 20th, 2009

quote-wallpaper83

Some of my friends complained that i write only on the flaws i see around. So, its an attempt to write something feel good or motivational and the topic is my favourite one-DREAMS..
We all have dreams-some dream of becoming super specialists in medicine, some dream of cracking CAT, some dream of going abroad, some dream of building a business empire etc.
Though, these dreams seem to be very different but they all have one fundamental thing in common that they all will be achieved provided the dreamer believes they are achievable…..thats the only prerequisite to achieve your dream, i think.
As history taught us, whatever seemed impossible to all at one time became a habit of all people after it has been done once by some dreamer. Every common device we use today without even thinking, say mobile, pc, cameras, were all dreams once in human history.
So, we should dream, whether it seems difficult or impossible to us at that time. As there is nothing in a caterpillar that tells us that its going to be a butterfly. Similarly, you cant be sure about the time when your dream will come true but it surely will, trust me.

Another point worth mentioning is that there is no age for dreaming. Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you dont mind, it doesnt matter, actually.
Finally, we should be daring in our dreams, let the practical aspects take a back seat while dreaming. The world is nothing but a canvas to your imagination, your dreams and be ready to take risks if you want to achieve your dreams. Ultimately, when you allow yourself no choices and take a risk, the survival instinct in you will build up an obsessive passion. It will give you the courage to be successful and your dream will be realised for sure.
Dont loose heart with temporary failures, winners do nothing exceptional except that they keep on moving from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.

the thing always happens that you really believe in; and the belief in that thing makes it happen……

WE HAVE ONE LIFE….DREAM BIG…..EXPERIENCE EVERYTHING, LEAVE NOTHING TO IMAGINATION…..

Its hightime now….

March 15th, 2009

Myself Gaurav Saini, I ‘m doing internship in rajindra hospital, patiala. At present, I ‘m posted in neonatology where I saw the facilities we have, to provide immediate care to the newborn baby.
To give you an idea of it, let me tell you an incident. We got a call from gynae dept. that a casarean section is going on. When we reached there, they handed over the baby to us and we assessed it. Baby was little premature as it was delivered a bit early to save mother. Baby needed some ‘not so advanced’ measures eg oxygen and incubator to survive which we dont have at present(after the accident that happened about one and half month back, i will talk about that sometime later). So, we have to refer the child to some other institution having such facilities. Being a poor labourer, child’s father was unsure if he can arrange for funds and he was almost ready to risk his baby’s life in our hospital. As he was feeling helpless and guilty that he cant save his child for 5-6 thousand rupees, he almost broke down. We convinced him and the child was taken some institute having those basic facilities. I just hope that the child survives.

I got a bit upset on seeing all this but i was told not to be upset, you will get used to this.
Everybody, from nurse to doc, told me that they also felt the same way initially when they encountered such circumstances where life can be put to risk for few thousand rupees and they all were sure that gradually i will also get used to.
I neither want to criticise govt, nor I want to take on hospital authorities today.Today, i just want to tell all that i dont want to get used to all this crap and I wont, whether I get some support or not in my plan though it is not the type of plans i usually think or dream (many people say i dream and think too much..)
The plan goes like this..
I will open an account in which i will ask my social circle to contribute. If we contribute 200-300 monthly, more than what we spend on coffee, we can collect 15-20 thousand every month. Initially when funds will be very limited, the contribution will be used for the treatment of newborns only who can be saved with basic facilities and with available money. I will make a network that whenever such a patient comes, we will be informed and I will also talk to private hospitals for the discounts they can afford for the patients brought by us.
I ‘m sure you all will agree with me that if we can save just 3-4 children every month, its more than worth a try. It actually is, trust me..

I actually want to know if  ”youngistaan” can only talk and blame the system or it can stand up for something. We no more afford to keep our nation in hands of corrupt, toothless and impotent system which make everybody “used to” it.
Its high time…..
Its high time, my friends……

Plz do reply to this or give me a call if you also feel the way I do and are willing to work with me on this plan..

Thanks & Regards,
Gaurav Saini.

SHAME OR PRIDE??

March 13th, 2009

pledge
This is the poster you will see when you enter the gynaecology dept in rajindra hospital. Its the pledge taken by undersigned doctors that they will not indulge in pre-natal sex determination(PNDT) by using the investigation techniques eg ultrasound. These investigations are essential to check if the child is growing normally inside mother so that we can take some medical measures if its development is not normal but these investigations also tell us about the sex of the child which can put girl child’s life to danger of forced abortion because there is preference for a boy child in our “lower as well as upper” sections of society. So, the use of these investigations to determine sex of child is banned to control female foeticide by PNDT Act, 1994 and further amended in 2002 and 2003. In simple words, The Act prohibits determination and disclosure of the sex of foetus .  It also prohibits any advertisements relating to pre-natal determination of sex and prescribes punishment for its contravention.  The person who contravenes the provisions of this Act is punishable with imprisonment and fine. The above docs took pledge that they wont use investigation techniques to determine the sex of child before birth which is PNDT Act in itself. In other words, they took pledge that they will follow PNDT act which is a law in india or simply put, they took pledge that they will follow law. I couldnt make out whether taking such a pledge is a pride or a shame??

As we all know, Law by defination is binding on all of us and breaking the law is a punishable offence. So, its a tight slap on the face of implementing agencies that these docs have to take pledge to show their solidarity with the cause.
Then how come idea of taking such a pledge strike mind of these docs??
There can be two reasons for such thinking. Either the law is toothless & ineffective or it is not implemented strictly.
Taking such a pledge is not a proud thing for we people. In my opinion, its a shame for our country that law is so handicap that it needs such pledges.

I conducted a survey on ‘Female foeticide’ during my mbbs and i came to know that people are so shameless that they openly talk of their preference for boy child. Suprisingly, you can’t blame it on illiteracy or poverty as the practice is fairly common in upper section of society too.
Finally, i end this post without suggesting any measure. I will just enumerate  the measures and persons we have to control this shame.
- there is PNDT Act( which is toothless or not implemented properly though it has been effective in many areas where administration was willing to implement it properly.)
-doctors, some perform it and rest of them think their duty is complete by not performing such abortions but they are responsible as they turn blind to others performing it .
-religious leaders who can fight for 100 years for a piece of land of worship of female goddess but wont say a word on killing of female child.
-politicians, most of them are actually dumb to do anything in this respect and the rest lack the required will.
-people who kill girl child or to be precise, i will say who kill their daughter and then distribute sweets on the birth of boy.

You all can think now whether these measures are enough or not….

Are we allergic to simple solutions and transparency that technology can offer?

March 10th, 2009

main1

Another real life experience from my duty at paediatrics dept left me wondering that why are we allergic to technology or simple solutions that it offers??
The story goes like this. A child patient, karan was admitted with complaints of cough, fever and anemia. After 2-3 days of treatment when cough and fever was absent but child was still anemic even after one blood transfusion, child’s parents asked us to discharge the child. The reason being child’s father has not gone to work since karan was here because an attendant is needed to bring lab reports or that sort of jobs. So, he is left with no money for further treatment,he even refused to another blood transfusion which is free except for charges of some simple blood tests which are mandatory for performing blood transfusion to avoid transfusion related complications.Charges for that tests are probably less than 100 which i earlier thought was minimal, but for many people like him its too much. Finally, he LAMA as we say it, left against medical advice i.e. without getting full treatment. Anemia and other presentations of malnutrition make the child prone or susceptible to infections. Now that he left without getting treated for anemia, he is still prone to infections and he will again come back to hospital and again he will go back partially treated.

A simple solution that i think, technology can offer in this case is that we can have two comp. operators and two computers, one in paediatrics dept and one in lab where tests are conducted which will be internet enabled or connected by some other means.Computer operator in the lab will send report via email and comp. operator in the dept will take out a print out or simply tell the doctor thereby saving daily wages of the child’s father with bonuses of saving time, travelling and preventing harassment that patients and their relatives face in completing such formalities due to their illiteracy. Still simpler, govt. can appoint 2-3 peons in each dept. to send samples and bring reports from labs  in cases where child’s attendant has to do away with his daily wages to get his son treated. We should remember that not all problems have a technological answer, but when they do, that is the more lasting solution.

My point of telling this story is not to blame our system but seeing this, it just made me think why are we so allergic to simple solutions and the transparency that technology can offer? If this is the way we are thinking of making india a developed country, i ‘m afraid we are on wrong path.Technology is always evolving and changing; we can’t be afraid to take advantage of change if we really want to live in developed INDIA.

Getting above the law by going under the table..

March 9th, 2009

corruption_india

Knowingly or unknowingly(and more often, knowingly) , we all have done this innumerable times..As we know practice makes men perfect, now we have perfected it so well that we dont even realise that we are doing something ILLEGAL while practising it.Though, i ‘m just 24 and its just 3-4 years that i started going to govt. offices or got exposed to our SYSTEM , I have practised it tens of time, seen it hundreds of time,  heard of it thousands of time and I am more than sure, it is performed lakhs of time almost daily in our SYSTEM.

I analysed that when we go to some private office, we avoid bribing concerned person by saying it is their duty and we defend our rights well. But when we go to some govt. office, we are more than ready, in fact we offer them bribe before asking for the job to be done. Why we become unaware of our rights here? Is’nt this the duty of the person concerned and our right too??

We do this because we want to save our time and to avoid unnecessary headache. Yeah, there is some problem in our SYSTEM that even getting small minor things to be done requires patience. So, to avoid that, we start bribing and it become our habit. Similarly, the person doing the job develops a habit of performing his duty in return of something and it forms a vicious circle. So indirectly, we make them habitual of taking bribes to avoid our minor delays and then it become difficult for other persons too to get their work done without going through this circle, even if they are ready to wait or they cant afford. In other words, for our convenience we make others face problems.
Leaving aside the other problems created by corruption like smuggling of drugs and weapons used in terror attacks on us, corruption has even left excellent schemes, eg polio eradication, nrega and mid day meal schemes, impotent.
Knowing all this very well, we will still practise it and even blame System. Above that, we will deny it that we have double standards and we, as a nation talk more and act less….is’nt it??

WE, THE YOUTH..

March 6th, 2009

youth

We have a 10 months old infant patient in our paediatriacs ward where i ‘m posted these days. He has his mother and grandmother as attendants, both illiterate. I was just accompanying his grandma for a blood test when i came to know about their story. Theirs is a family of seven comprising harman’s grandparents having 3 sons with eldest son married having a son, harman from his poliomyelitic wife. Harman’s father is an alcoholic.I havnt seen him yet as he has never been here yet to see his ill son. He is busy enjoying his drinks. He is not earning anything. His two younger brothers are labourers who are spending for his wife and child. His brothers borrowed Rs.1500 from someone for harman’s treatment. Of that 1500, harman got only 1200 and his father used 300 for buying liquour for himself.
He is also youth of india, a young man in his early twenties like me like many others.I wondered why he is different from me and many others, maybe his illteracy and poverty is to be blamed. But he is different from his brothers too who also are illterate and poor.

So, who is the real youth of India? We, the literate OR harman’s father, the illiterate and poor OR his brothers?

Actually, all of above..

BUT,  India needs youth of the third type only who is aware of his responsibilities and practise them also. Nor youth like us who know their rights and responsibilties both but practise only rights, neither youth like Harman’s father who is unaware of rights as well as responsibilties.
